The Prez Sez

Hi Folks!
Here it is June already; the year half through.  There have been lots of developments lately.  We just completed a windy, but exiting Combat contest (everyone was exited that yours truly was not flying!), and we have the Father's Day Fun Fly coming up on the 15th of June (I just arranged for another two planes as prizes, and am working on more).
Regrettably, we had a fellow RC pilot lose his life in a freak accident on 18 May in Tucson.  This occurrence brings us all back to the reality that our aircraft are in fact not toys, but can be lethal to ourselves and our friends.  I want to get back to the basics of safety, and found the
following safety article at the web site of our friends at RJL:
Keep your hands a safe distance from the propeller when making adjustments to the carburetor and when disconnecting the glow plug driver.
We stress the use of a chicken stick or electric starter to prevent injury when starting your engine. Do not use your fingers In case of difficulty, the safest and easiest way to stop the engine is to pinch off the fuel line or remove it from the carburetor. Never throw anything into the propeller (rags, etc.) to stop the engine.
Never clamp your engine in a vice to test run. Mount your engine securely in your airplane or a commercial test stand. Never use

wood screws to mount your engine.  Use good quality machine screws and nuts.
Never run your engine in an enclosed area. Engines produce dangerous exhaust gases and must be run outdoors only.
Never use propellers with nicks, scratches or cracks. Always use the correct size propeller for your engine. Be sure prop nut is tight and recheck it after each flight. Nylon props can be extremely dangerous if improperly used. Read prop manufacturers directions carefully.

Mothers Day Contest

My sincere thanks to Pete, Jerry, and Advance Ceramics Research who contributed to the success of this event!! All contestants had a good time. First for electrics was won by Phillip Brister of Patagonia; second by Thomas Fenn of S.V. First Prize for gas by David Jenkins of S.V. Second Dick Horn of Scottsdale AZ. Third Jerry Mingo of Huachuca City. Fourth Jerry Deebach of S.V.
The series of thermal duration contests were started in 1975 when a group of us joined the League of Silent Flight. The contest was held on Memorial Day every year since then until this year when the Club moved it to Mother's Day. The contest has been held in memory of Ed Bollin since his death in 1984. This was the 19th contest in his memory.

.Next MMRCC Club Meeting

The next meeting of the MMRCC is scheduled for June 6, 2002 at 7:00 P.M. The meeting will be held at the TRW facility (Highway 90 Bypass). Personnel are required to sign-in and sign out for security purposes.

Combat

Eight contestants and much wind   showed up for the shootout. All, including the spectators, had much fun.  I am not sure, but I think the wind was the big winner.
