The
Prez Sez
Hi Folks,
If you haven't been out to the field lately, the City has made lots of
changes out there. The main concrete pad has been extended forty feet to
the east, and posts and wire have been installed at both ends of the field
to try to restrict our late night visitors from driving on the runway.
As you know, restricting vehicle access on the runway is paramount before
any paving is done. The City is also installing signs which identify the
large plane and RC trailer parking area, and working to restore the fences
across the washes.
Changing the subject, I don't know how many of you regularly read Dave
Brown's comments in the front of Model Aviation each month, but I think
that it is important to our hobby that you do. Dave has been pontificating
on the need to include the foamy, back yard and school yard flyers into
the AMA in order to form an all inclusive, flight oriented membership group.
I talked to Dave briefly on this subject, and his concerns are that we
are splintering off into groups that just don't feel that they need the
AMA. Dave pointed out there was a town in which this got totally out of
hand, and after several folks were injured by foamies and park flyers flown
in the city park and in neighborhoods, the town passed an ordinance forbidding
the flying of RC aircraft. Dave makes the point that if we don't continue
to band together in a single voice for model aviation, we won't be heard.
We, also, have some of this going on within our community, although for
different reasons. We have folks who fly at the field, don't do any work
there, and don't pay membership dues to the club which makes flying at
Bollin possible for them. I met a fellow a few weeks ago who lives on post,
had been told about Bollin, purchased a Tower trainer and just came out
to fly. I ran into him on his second attempt; his first resulted in him
sending Tower some more shekels for another plane. Folks, one of the things
we are here for is an educational goal to teach new RC pilots; that's a
benefit of belonging to a sanctioned club!
Please read Dave Brown's comments on this subject; it's important. And
if you know someone that is flying at Bollin, or wants to fly at Bollin,
and are not a member of Mesquite Modelers, encourage them to join. Without
Mesquite Modelers, and the force of its members on the City, Bollin Field
would not exist.
Until next month, keep 'em flying! Bill.
