Ladies and Gents, It is now the 17th of June, and another Father’s Day Fun Fly is behind us. For those that were there and participated, “Thank You” – without you, it would not happen. A special thanks for Jerry Mingo for getting the field set up and helping with the judging, and to Pete Haring, for the set up and the judging. Saturday the 15th started like every other day of that week; bright, a little hazy, and hot. And that was at 6 a.m.! I went to the field early to get in a few practice flights, and get everything set up for the contest. Pete and Jerry arrived soon after, and shortly after 7 we had registration (10 pilots registered) and the field was ready for the day. We did the Pilots Briefing, and the fun began at 8 a.m. Our fist event was the 703 Class C Climb and Glide. Regrettably, I had to deny two entrants in this event because the aircraft they proposed to use were not “Fun Fly” aircraft, as stated in the rules. Some of the times posted by the entrants were the lowest that I can remember ever having, and I can only attribute this to the heat. Rick Bean won the event with about half the time he had the previous year. Rick took home $50 for his trouble. Our next event was the Bomb Drop, and Rick Bean won that event by coming closest to the bulls eye (11”), and won a SIG Rascal for his trouble. What was clearly interesting about this event was the ingenuity the various pilots showed in making radio controlled bomb drop mechanisms. Having said that, just a reminder that Tom Robideaux came within 11 feet using the old coffee cup – way to go Tom. The next event was the Poker Hand, also known as the precision landing exercise. We had many very good pilots trying there own variation of how to land on a 10 foot spot, but our very own Al Tomlinson (LT Al), did it best by posting a royal flush, and winning a Lanier Fun Fly ARF for his trouble. The final event was a special CD called event, and turned out to be Roops; take off, cross a specified line, do a roll and a loop and touch down. Ingenuity again was what I hoped to foster, and it did happen. Several of the senior pilots took off, crossed the line and accomplished both maneuvers and managed to touch down before they got to the end of the field. Regrettably, the winner of this event, Tom Fenn, caused some amount of damage to his aircraft in this event. For winning, Tom got a SIG Rascal. Well, that's it for this year. Please send your comments to me, Bill Hermes, and let me know what you'd like to see different for next year, or if you would like to see more than one of these events per year. |
